Johnson Design Works has a new project to design a Flash website for the upcoming Documentary: The Little Red Truck. Jason and I are working together to develop the Flash component and have officially kicked off the project. This is going to be a fun website.

Since the ActionScript work motion graphics will be on my shoulders, I am very excited to start working on some basic tools for them to update and upload content to easily change their site as needed. Plus the central characters in this documentary are children, so the look and feel of the site will be a lot more playful than the corporate work I usually do.

Beta testing this web application is really exciting for me. In addition to having friends involved, I honestly feel this is the logical evolution of the trackback or pingback. The YouTube embed code has become sort of a standard to allow users to embed flash. SNI.PS lets people grab what ever media they want. No matter what type of media is being embedded, the source is properly referenced.

I used it below to give their elevator pitch. Notice the titling, block-quoting and source declaration. Very nice indeed…

About SNI.PS

Aside from the flawed flash plug-in detection (I visited with the latest plug-in and it still forced me through the upgrade) it is a great example of blending user-generated content, and a strong brand presence online. Adobe’s domination in the advertising and graphic design software industry has not resulted in resting on their laurels.

In addition to my usual grab-bag HTML, Flash and Fireworks documents of color treatments I used to save on my computer, I can hop online and see what other designers are using around the web. Better yet I can track trends by viewing the most popular and the highest rated. I think this is a great start to the tool. I would like to see them take the RSS feeds a little further and allow more organization of color pallets, but that would be looking a gift horse in the mouth.

While working with the Sweet Onion Creations team on the Tom Weiskopf Designs website, Jake and I started discussing the original Sweet Onion Creations website I put together at the company’s inception. Jake and I had originally decided on an 800 x 600 compliant website. With the changing trends in the consumer marketplace towards bigger and bigger monitors and laptops, we thought we might want to give everything a bit more breathing room and add some width to his website.

In addition to the new width, some new image standards were put in place and the galler section flash movie was able to be adjusted to a larger size. In addition, rendering examples from our head 3D guru Wayne Harney were added via an XML-driven Flash video player. These improvements not only make the site better looking, but they allow the user greater access to the models through bigger and better media elements.

Future improvements t the Sweet Onion Creations website will most likely include a custom-designed blog, a bigger section dedicated to the creative portfolio, and more Flash elements to enhance the traffic from the home page. Keep your eyes out for the home page improvements and keep checking the video section for more cool 3D work!

When we last worked with Zoot, they had me redesign their website on a 2-week time window. I haven’t worked like that in a while. In the meantime, my wife gave birth with me in the recovery room working away on my laptop at 2 am in between feedings and pushing the morphine button.

Following my suggestion, they are putting the frosting on the cake by adding a custom flash piece to the home page. The piece will incorporate (you guessed it) and XML-driven file to display photos and text with animation and messaging to support the brand.

The interactive project will then be incorporated into the design and development of the Tom Weiskopf Designs website.

The goal of the two projects is to bring out Tom’s hands-on approach as a differentiator between TWD and their peers in the industry. Quite simply, when you hire Tom Weiskopf, you get Tom and his team. He is on-site and involved from concept to completion. That says a lot, in an industry packed with corporate design companies selling the name of someone who will never visit the location of the course.

Tom is a wonderful client who is a no-nonsense kind of guy and we are very happy to be able to work with him. His work has a very honest, hand-crafted element, with which I readily identify as a designer. It is this very kind of “build it and have fun” element which drew me into graphic design.

As the work progresses, be on the lookout for screen shots and photos of the touchscreen in action.

I give a personal thank-you to Joshua Davis for helping the WordPress community move beyond the blog community into the mainstream of designers looking for a content management solution to fit their needs.

Joshua Davis has always been sort of a hero of mine. Standing up to the critiques of function-over-form guru Jacob Nielson and maintaining that design is something that should engage users, even if it sort of confuses them a little. Well over the years, his website has come around a bit more toward the function of a gallery website. His flash website started to lean more and more toward the work being featured and only being supported by the design of the site. This is about as good as it gets. Until he adopted WordPress.

What a guy. I now am an official fanboy of Joshua Davis. He is not only using cool methods and ideas behind his work, he is now using one of the most powerful content management tools around to show it off. This is my official thank-you to him for opening the eyes of so many to what is possible through a format that is user-friendly and can also be 100% custom-fit to the desires of the designer.

Prudential Montana has hired Johnson Design Works (and me) to build interactive CD-ROM to enhance web experience with a custom CD template for the high-end real estate market. Their project is XML driven flash using a simple XML file to customize the CD’s content for individual buyers or for individual listings.

The project has area slide shows, property slide shows, and customizable text content in a full-screen, branded presentation that is customized for the individual agent. The content adjusts for which agent is sending the CD, which office the agent is with, lists area photography for a general slide show to get users familiar with the local areas, and then gives individual listing information and photography in an easy-to-navigate interface.

This project uses ActionScript that I have previously only been able to “play” with. I would like to turn this into a windows application to compile the files and XML documents without editing any of the settings manually, and hope to see a budget that can cover this in the future.

These kinds of projects are just what this industry needs. Any realtor can put an offer on a house, and their personalized service is really what sets them apart. I am glad to see Purdential raising the bar, not only on their website, but also through projects like these.
